Why We Snore

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring is the sound of air moving past relaxed tissue in the throat during sleep. When the airway narrows, the soft palate, tongue, and throat tissues vibrate as you breathe. Common contributors include the shape of your jaw and airway, nasal congestion, extra weight, alcohol before bed, and sleeping on your back.

Occasional light snoring is common. But loud, nightly snoring is a sign your airway is struggling to stay open, and it deserves a closer look.

When to Take It Seriously

Is Your Snoring a Sign of Sleep Apnea?

Snoring is the most common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but your snoring should be evaluated if it comes with any of the following:

A Quiet Solution That Fits in Your Hand

A custom oral appliance gently holds your lower jaw slightly forward while you sleep. That keeps your airway open, so air moves smoothly instead of vibrating the tissue in your throat.

Custom Fit

Made from precise impressions or scans of your teeth. Far more comfortable and effective than over-the-counter snore guards.

Adjustable

We fine-tune the position of your appliance over several visits until the snoring stops and you're comfortable.

Easy to Live With

No mask, no hose, no electricity. It's silent, fits in a small case, and travels anywhere.

Better Sleep for Two

Snoring Affects the Whole Household

Bed partners of loud snorers lose sleep too. Many couples end up in separate bedrooms. Treating snoring often helps both of you rest again.

★★★★★

“Dr. V saved my marriage! My wife had kicked me out of the bedroom because my snoring and gasping kept her up all night. With the sleep appliance, I don't snore or gasp anymore, and I'm back in the bedroom!”

Is Snoring Treatment Covered?

Medical insurance, including Medicare, typically covers oral appliance therapy when you've been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring without sleep apnea is usually not covered. That's one more reason we recommend screening first: if a sleep test shows sleep apnea, your treatment is often covered, and you'll be protecting your health as well as your sleep.

Our team checks your benefits and handles the paperwork, so you'll know what to expect before treatment begins. Read our FAQ →
